Seasonal Stewardship Coordinator
Job Term: This is a temporary, seasonal full-time position to start early to mid-May and end in mid-September (start and end dates are flexible). As funding allows, we may extend the length of the contract and expand upon the task list if agreeable to both parties.
Hours: 32-40 hours per week (negotiable)
Compensation: $22/hour, paid holidays
Supervisor: Executive director with support from co-chairs of the Stewardship Committee.

Location: Conservation areas throughout the Sebasticook River watershed, but the majority of work will take place in the Unity/Burnham area. Our office is located in Thorndike, Maine.
Job Requirements: The stewardship coordinator position requires comfort working outdoors, experience with safe operation of tools and equipment used for land management, proven ability to do physical work, a strong work ethic, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, creative thinking and problem-solving, and dependability. Computer skills, reliable transportation, and prior experience in land conservation, land management, trail work, or related fields are required.
Job Responsibilities:

Conduct general, seasonally relevant stewardship activities across all preserves, and activities specific to Forest Management Plan implementation per NRCS grant related to habitat restoration. This may include trail layout, design, rerouting, and building new trails; conducting routine trail maintenance, using power tools, hand tools, and other equipment; and assisting with land management including invasive plant removal and management and tree or shrub planting.

Assist with ongoing signage and wayfinding improvements, which may include working with volunteers to construct kiosks, benches, and trail signs.

Update work logs for volunteers and/or contractors.

Plan, organize, and lead groups of volunteers to complete various stewardship projects (e.g. trail maintenance and construction, invasive plant identification and mechanical removal).

Contribute to volunteer recruitment and outreach programs.

Research recommendations for and implement an early-detection/rapid response invasive plant program across select preserves.

Review and update preserve-wide assessments and refer to conservation management plans to generate stewardship tasks for volunteers and contractors, working from Forest Management Plan implementation recommendations where applicable.

Assist with grant reporting.

Other related tasks as assigned (e.g. boundary/easement monitoring, generating social media content).

Attend stewardship meetings and monthly volunteer workday (last Sunday of the month), and one additional weekly workday as determined with the stewardship committee.
Necessary Qualifications:
-
Previous experience in land conservation, land management, forestry, trail work, or related fields.

Experience operating equipment, hand tools, and power tools such as weedwhackers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and brush saws, or a willingness to learn.

Stewardship or trail building experience, or a willingness to learn.

Experience in working in challenging outdoor conditions, including but not limited to: heat, rain, biting insects, and difficult terrain.

Driver’s license and reliable personal transportation.

Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment over rough ground.

Ability to work responsibly, safely, and at times independently.

Ability to manage time and tasks on independent projects.

Strong oral communication skills, positive attitude, and a passion for land conservation.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
6-month experience in land conservation, land management, forestry, trail work, or related fields such as construction, agriculture, landscaping, surveying, recreation management, or wildlife ecology.

Previous experience in a stewardship or trail-building position.

Experience communicating with and working with volunteers and the general public.

Knowledge of local landscape features, flora and fauna.

Wilderness First Aid or Basic First Aid Certification.
Training: Training opportunities in the use of stewardship tools and equipment and first aid will be provided.
Schedule: Regular 32-40-hour per week work schedule, with a weekly schedule determined by supervisor. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.
